These were my overall winners, last year: 6 Chocolate Orange Mince Pies
I purchased two boxes, as I expected them to be bought faster than the shelves could be restocked; if last years’ experience was anything to go by!
The box follows on the theme of the other Specially Selected products, but the colouring that accompanies this box is a deep orange colour.
The pie has the word Noel, written in raised pastry (which distinguishes it from the salted caramel pies with a similar appearance) as well as some granulated sugar. The edge is well crimped, and pies have a well domed lid.
Last year, these were my top pie. I applauded ALDI for providing us with something completely different from the norm, and they tasted fantastic.
Let’s tuck straight in. The pastry was not too sweet and held together well. The chocolate layer was firm and complemented the soft consistency of the mincemeat. The chocolate/orange/mincemeat mixture is harmonious in my mouth and no flavour is too strong against the others.
As with the salted caramel pies, I don’t think ALDI need to limit these to the festive season. They would be appreciated at any time of the year. I don’t believe these are the best pies I’ve tasted this year, but are a wonderful Christmas treat I hope ALDI continues to produce.
