ALDI Specially Selected Exquisite Mince Pies

I’ve been reviewing a few Specially Selected products recently and am used to their familiar black boxes with gold/silver writing and differing coloured sections for each product.

These are different still. They have the Specially Selected seal of quality, they also have a sizable window to enable to you get to know the product you’re about to buy, but they have the word Exquisite.

The pies are also hand crafted.

Ooh, I said.

I said ooh as I picked them up and wondered what a hand crafted pie could possibly taste like. My first thought is that hand-made pies are often small, and the pastry can be thick in certain areas. Hand crafted takes me away from that and towards the mindset that maybe more attention has been put into the creation of these.

2.99 for six pies means that had better be true.

The pastry tastes buttery and has a good bite. The frangipane layer is an interesting combination and melds well with the mincemeat and almonds. The pies are a good depth and the mincemeat, as per usual with ALDI is of very good quality. They didn’t wow me, but were a nice pie to try, for the different topping.

Taste (out of 10) – 8

Value (out of 10) – 4

Positive – interesting frangipane taste +2

Negative – There are nicer pies available (if you can find them) -1

Overall – 13/20

  1. Helloo, I love your Blog Post. I recently completed an article on preserving beef. I love to make my own gammon for Christmas!. I will be making a basic pudding to go with it. The teenagers will be off school and I am positive they are going to love it.
