Sainbury’s Taste the Difference pies are usually very good and last year was a no different. Here’s the review: Taste the Difference 2017
There is one minor difference between these and the pies I devoured in 2017.
The Pie lid has been revamped, replacing what looked like quite a rough, double star shape with a larger single pastry star shape (more protection for the mincemeat) containing a raised snowflake pattern. Delicate granules of sugar adorn each pie.
Like last year, there is a circular shape, to the upper right of the title which reads, ‘For the Taste of Christmas’. Magical. Other than this little festive token, you could be forgiven for thinking that these are just party food. I’d never complain if these were at my party however!
They look much neater and the finish is smarter than the previous year.
The pies are housed in a smart, gold plastic tray protected by plastic packaging for ultimate freshness.
The pie in my hand was extremely uniform, no pastry hanging over the edge like a child looking down over a bridge, although I did get a look at a cheeky raisin/sultana peeking out through the small gap in the lid. ooh, naughty.
The pie has a good solid structure. The pastry is buttery and not overly crumbly. The mincemeat has a wonderful mouthfeel and the taste, almost comparable to a thick jam but with a wonderful depth of taste and not too sweet. Two were gone extremely quickly. Very good pies.
Taste (1 – 10) – 9/10 – a well dressed pie, with a delicious taste
Value for money (1 – 5) – 3/5
Total – 12/15
