£1 for 6 pies, or 16.6p each.
This box was part of my birthday present at work, so thank you to Dr Cooper and Adrian for the thoughtful gift!
The box is a bright, rich red with two corners adorned with some wreath material. A jolly box for a change, staying with a traditional theme, instead of trying to be too modern like some supermarkets. This works.
This year, more supermarkets are including a viewing window and these pies, while they look quite simple are pretty enough to warrant this box upgrade. And for one whole pound.
The pies look quite pale, and one has the largest dome I’ve seen for a while, but the even crimp and pastry snowflake on the six pies restores the balance a bit. The pies have a tiny amount of granulated sugar, but hey, anything is better than icing sugar……. or as i like to call it, the ‘White choking hazard of Christmas’.
The pastry isn’t particularly sweet, but the wetter mincemeat combats the almost savoury first bite with its own sweetness. I can taste pieces of fruit in the mincemeat which is a sign that it hasn’t been cooked down too much.
Taste (1 – 10) – 6/10 – A no fuss pie, which is well priced
Value for money (1 – 5) – 4/5
Total – 10/15
