Here was the previous review: Rhubarb & Stem Ginger Pies – 2016
As far as i’m aware, Tesco didn’t produce these last year. I could be wrong, but I kept a close eye on the range they had provided, without finding these.
The festive Tesco Finest box remains rather similar to the last few years, but the pie in the top right picture is what i’m buying them for. It looks gooey and the filling looks wonderful and thick.
Tesco have consistently good looking pies, they are uniform in shape and colour, the lids are the same/similar height and these in particular have been well sugared.
Unlike back in 2016, the trays are now silver, just like mince pies. I wonder why they changed from yellow?
The bottom pastry is almost cakey, the filling is not overly sweet nor is the ginger overpowering. I did expect a bit more of a rhubarb taste, and feel the tartness could have added something extra but on the plus side, the pastry turned into almost a rhubarb crumble in my mouth.
