£2.29 per pack and 38 pence per pie.
There’s recently been a new LIDL planted quite close to my house and as a result, I’ve visited them more often.
On a recent trip, I managed to find gingerbread mince pies. “A new flavoured pie”, I said to myself. Silently.
The star-studded-gingerbread-coloured box was what caught my eye from the start; a stand alone colour to many other pies for sale now.
I was intrigued as to why anyone would use the shade “loose stool” for a product, but after a quick read, it all made sense.
There’s a good sized window so you can view the handsome, uniform pies. The stars atop each are the same size, placed evenly and all of a similar colour.
Delicately nibbling some pastry first, I got a subtle hint of the gingerbread and enjoyed that it wasn’t overpowering.
Moist, rich mincemeat and a larger hit of ginger greeted my mouth and was a bit stronger than I was expecting. It certainly warms the throat.
Hmm, after eating the whole pie, I found it an interesting product. The overall sweetness of the mincemeat and the strength of the ginger was a bit too much for me, if toned down, I’d score them higher.
Taste (1 – 10) – 6/10 – tasty, interesting but a tad too sweet and a bit too much ginger.
Value for money (1 – 5) – 3/5
Total – 9/15
