In today’s double review, I look at the standard and luxury mince pies that Iceland have to offer.
The standard pies will only require you to part with a pound coin, whereas you’ll need £1.89 for the luxury product. 89p for a luxury product isn’t too shabby either, but that’s what i’ve come to expect from Iceland – great value for money
Let’s see the difference between the two types:
Standard – £1.00 or 17p per pie
Previous review: Iceland 6 Deep Fill Mince Pies
The standard box of mince pies has a great design. It’s cheery and vibrant, with a deep red running through it. the pies are displayed as a picture (no window here), looking neat, tidy and perfectly edible.
Taking the pies out of the box, you realise they are in a plastic tray, but don’t have any plastic covering them for freshness. Take note of this, if you’re tempted to open them quickly on your lap in order to review them!
The pies are a good size and full to the top with quite wet mincemeat. It’s very tasty, if a little sharp.
Taste (1 – 10) – 8/10 – a cheap pie and perfectly tasty too
Value for money (1 – 5) – 4/5
Total – 12/15
Luxury – £1.89 or 32p per pie
Last year’s review: Iceland 6 Luxury Mince Pies
The luxury box of mince pies is much darker, absent of the vibrancy and bright packaging, instead going for a scene of the pies on a piece of slate, sitting on a wooden table. A much more adult, serious looking box. The pies look extremely attractive, covered in a drift of icing sugar. The lovely look of the pies is the plus point, so, perhaps the box design here is meant to highlight the mince pies?
I’d say that’s the case!
These pies are also only in a plastic tray. Luckily I learned my lesson from the standard pies and opened these up over the sink. They look quite tidy and the image on the box is a fair representation of what you get.
They are full of mincemeat, just like the standard variety, but the mincemeat is more alcoholic, a bit thicker and there’s a bit more to it. Very good indeed. If they looked a bit neater, i’d give a 10.
Taste (1 – 10) – 9/10 – These are my first 9/10 pies. They’re really good.
Value for money (1 – 5) – 3/5
Total – 12/15
