ASDA EXCEPTIONAL 6 Luxury Mince Pies

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference 6 Mince Pies

I am comparing two Supermarkets’ higher end range of mince pies and seeing which one is best. Come along with me.

ASDA EXCEPTIONAL 6 Luxury Mince Pies

ASDA have this wonderful habit of not detailing which product specifically you’re buying, so my receipt says MINCE PIE or MINCE PIES with various different prices.

Their website reliably informs me that these are a respectable £2.75.

That’s a good price point and gives a Price per pie (ppp) of 4/5.

The Dark green box gives off a good feel, it’s not bright and in your face, more demure. The box features its own ‘Exceptional’ logo, to show that this line of products has been given some thought.

A tasty, richly filled pie is on the box, with a dollop-of-cream hat. It certainly makes you want to eat one. I like how you can see definition in the mincemeat, you might be able to tell what each piece is, perhaps. I’d like some scenery, or something extra to make the box stand out more.

Plus, the mincemeat is laden with Ruby Port, Valencian Orange oil and Cognac. I’ll be the judge.

the pies have a purposely placed raisin in most of the holes where the edges of the star are. it’s a nice touch, a human touch.

The pies are quite small.

The pastry is quite thick, but it’s sweet. The mincemeat isn’t that sweet though, it’s fruity but a tad bland. On the second bite, there’s the alcohol and it’s a welcome addition. Even with thick pastry, the pies do crumble to nothing.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference 6 Mince Pies.

As i’ve mentioned before, Sainsbury’s Taste the difference products – especially their festive packaging, seem to look more party orientated than other Supermarkets.

Perhaps by using this bright, attractive purple scheme, they’re telling us that these are for any occasion not just Christmas!

The box is quite eye catching and hard to miss. They were £3 and still get a price per pie of 4. Well done.

The pies can be seen through the plastic window and they look rather neat, each with a well sculpted snowflake on a pastry star. A tiny amount of sugar sits on each pie lid.

Sainsbury’s have been my favourite in a previous year. If i remember correctly, the filling was a bit syrupy and almost a fudgy consistency. We’ll see today though.

Both packs of pies were easy to get into as well.

A lovely smell comes as soon as you open the packaging. Yes. The mincemeat filling is the same as i remember, thick and syrupy but not dry. it’s a really nice mouth sensation. The pastry is a case, not a barrier or a liability. I have enjoyed eating these and still want another. That’s a good sign in my eyes. Top marks for taste.

To close, both were well presented pies in good looking packaging, even if they went different ways with it.

The Sainsbury’s pies definitely met my requirements for taste, but I wouldn’t be too disappointed with the ASDA ones.
